Phthalocyanine derivatives show much potential as the active layer in organic field effect transistors, as well as the light absorbing component in organic solar cells. In an attempt to further improve the charge transporting properties, we have been developing phthalocyanine analogues in which the benzenoid ring system is replaced with electron rich heterocycles containing a chalcogen atom. In this talk I will discuss the synthesis of a range of porphyrazine derivatives incorporating thiophene, thienothiophene or selenophene. I will discuss the influence of the peripheral heterocycle on the optical and morphological properties, as well as on the performance in organic field effect transistor and organic solar cells.
