This paper surveys recent work on electrochromic and thermochromic materials and devices. The first part deals with electrochromic films based on of tungsten oxide and nickel oxide with emphasis on durability under extended cycling in different electrolytes, and the second part reports on thermochromic films based on vanadium oxide with focus on the role of nanostructure. Several new results will be discussed, including modelling of long-term cycling durability for electrochromic Ni oxide films and the growth of V oxide films on different substrates and in different gaseous ambients. Perspectives are given on device manufacturing.
