Organometallic complexes of carbon materials are potentially useful in organometallic catalysis, as a means to increase the dimensionality of graphene and carbon nanotubes, as interconnects between graphitic surfaces and as constituents for the realization of new materials. We have recently shown that the bis-η6-bond between the benzenoid ring systems of graphene and carbon nanotubes (SWNTs), is capable of electronically conjugating these systems and preserves the delocalized band structure by the constructive rehybridization of the graphene ∏-system with the vacant chromium dΠ orbital. Bis-hexahapto organometallic chemistry offers a new approach to electrically contacting and interconnecting graphitic surfaces and may lead to new materials and phenomena with potential applications in fields such as organometallic catalysis and atomic spintronics.
