The use of solid electrolytes rather than currently used organic carbonate liquid solutions can improve battery safety. The implementation of solid electrolytes requires improvement in the lithium ion conductivity of the electrolyte materials.  In this research, garnet-type Li7La3Zr2O12 (LLZO) is investigated. One of the challenges in the synthesis of LLZO is producing the desired cubic phase, because low-temperature processing can lead to formation of the tetragonal phase, while high-temperature processing can lead to loss of lithium.  In this work, results on processing of garnet-type LLZO powders and ceramics are presented.
