Recently, endohedral species containing uranium ions have been detected by MALDI mass spectrometry.  In this communication, we will describe the electronic and structural features for some new uranium endohedral fullerenes. In particular, we will discuss the potential different oxidation states of the uranium ions when they are encapsulated in fullerenes. Because of their complex electronic structure we will also show that some models can be used to determine the optimal structures for uranium endohedral metallofullerenes.
