Graphene based materials have been extensively employed to improve the performance of electrochemical storage devices as well as solar cells. Graphene oxide has also been extensively used to improve the performance of electrocatalysts in fuel cells and sensing devices. We have now probed the electron storage and electron shuttling property of graphene oxide by anchoring two redox couples (methyl viologen and ferrocene). During the cathodic scan, we see a quasi-reversible reduction of MV2+ indicating the loss of electrons in charging of reduced graphene oxide. The electrons stored in reduced graphene oxide are then utilized to regenerate ferrocene during the anodic scan. The property of reduced graphene oxide film to store and shuttle electrons shows its ability to act as an electrocatalyst.
