We have exploited a crystal engineering approach for generating polydiacetylenes (PDAs) with pendent aromatic groups, which are designed as straighforward precursors of graphene nanoribbons with narrow width. Their conversion to graphene-like structures at modest temperatures will be described, as well as the similar conversion and reaction mechanisms of model compounds for the PDAs.
