Li(NixMnyCoz)O2 (NMCs) layered oxides are very promising cathodes for Li-ion batteries due to their high theoretical capacities and high working voltages. However, a variety of local distortions exist in NMC compounds and likely influence their electrochemical performance. Identifying and further quantifying these local distortions is important for understanding their structure/property relationships and thus providing insights into how to produce NMC samples with optimal properties. In this work, a comparative study of the local structure of many NMC compositions was carried out using synchrotron and neutron total scattering data. Novel methods were developed to quantify the degree of local ordering to investigate its dependence on sample composition.
