The practical applications of lithium–sulfur batteries (LSBs) are extremely limited owing to their poor electrochemical performance, which results from the shuttling effect of lithium polysulfides (LPSs) and the growth of Li dendrites. Here, we propose the use of the functional separator membrane based on PP seperator as a multifunctional shield for ultrastable LSBs. The PP seperator was initially sulfonated on which amine containing chitosan and sulfonic acid containing poly(styrene sulfonate) was coated repeatedly to yield multi-layered system. The multi-layer film improves the mechanical and thermal properties of of PP film. Furthermore, the abundant polar functional groups of seperator allows high ionic conductivity, effective adsorption of LPS, and stable Li plating and stripping by suppressing Li dendrite growth. The multifunctional shielding of the LSB by the multi-layered seperator results in outstanding ultrastable cycling performance even at lean electrolyte condition. The proposed multifunctional seperator is expected to have a wide range of applications in energy storage systems in addition to LSBs.
