The synthesis of [60]fullerene (C₆₀)-fused furochromenones was recently achieved by the palladium-catalyzed heteroannulation of C₆₀ with 4-hydroxycoumarins. In this talk, I will demonstrate that the representative C₆₀-fused furochromenone can be electrochemically reduced under controlled potential electrolysis (PCE) to generate the corresponding dianionic species. The generated dianionic C₆₀-fused furochromenone are then treated with benzyl bromide, acetic acid and trifluoacetic acid to afford 1,2,3,4- and 1,2,3,16-adducts under different reaction conditions.
