Visualisation and Quantification of Microstructural Change in Battery Electrodes

The paper will present recent results in which 3D imaging and analysis is used to explore the microstructure of electrodes used within lithium batteries, zinc-air batteries and redox flow batteries. In particular, case studies will be presented observing in-operando delamination in silicon based lithium battery anodes, and zinc dendrite formation in zinc-air batteries. These studies offer insight into associated degradation and failure mechanisms, and inform work aimed at engineering improved microstructures for energy storage applications.
