SOFC System for Battery Electric Vehicle Range Extension: Results of the First Half of the Mestrex Project

The MeStREx (Metallic Stack for Range Extender) project has being running since October 2015 and sees AVL-List GmbH (AT), Plansee GmbH (AT), Nissan (UK), Phystech Coating GmbH (AT) and the Technical University of Graz (AT) cooperate in an effort to develop an SOFC range extender system for a Battery electric vehicle. The SOFC system is specially designed for a fuel mixture containing water and ethanol. Targets for the system include 5kW Net power output, a 50% net APU efficiency and they system should deliver full power within 30 minutes. In order to reach these targets AVL-List GmbH has developed novel technological solutions that have been integrated into a test stand system. The system has been designed using a well-balanced mixture of various simulation tools and targeted experimental development. A novel start up technology has been developed that offers advantages over traditional techniques and facilitates the rapid start in a compact and efficient manner. Also, technology for reforming the fuel and water mixture has been developed and tested in close cooperation the university partners. Special metal supported stacks are being developed by Plansee that allow a rapid start and high electrical performance and efficiency. Initial results from all partners are very promising as a step towards the final goal of feasible SOFC system integration into a roadworthy vehicle. In the next step this system will be scaled in order to be integrated into a Nissan vehicle for further testing. Therefore the electrical setup and system design towards automotive standards is a key consideration and has already been intensely scrutinized.
