Semiconductor has been widely used in photocatalytic and photovoltaic devices. The electronic band structure governs the charge separation, charge migration and charge recombination processes.  This talk provides an insight into the band gap, the deep and shallow level states in the band gap and the surface trap states that play important roles in the processes of photo-generated charge carriers in the metal oxide semiconductors. Also, this talk demonstrates how to engineer the bulk band structure and the surface states in order to enhance the solar energy conversion.
