The interface between a perfluorosufonic acid ionomer like Nafion and platinum, the electrocatalyst, has been attracting more and more attention in the studies on PEFCs recently because experimental and theoretical studies have been revealing that the interface has the dominant impact on the PEFC performance in both the high and low current density regions.

This tutorial lecture reviews those studies especially focusing on the theoretical and modeling studies and suggests key areas for further improvement.
