The carbon coating on silicon oxide (SiO) was designed to have both high conductivity and elastic polymeric properties. By sintering a pyrene-based homopolymer poly (1-pyrenemethyl methacrylate) at temperatures between 400–600° C and avoiding carbonization at temperatures >800 °C, we obtain a carbon coating which have some residue polymer properties and graphite-like structure, which effective improves the electrochemical performance of SiO for applications as the anode materials for Li-ion batteries. This anode electrode made with full carbon coated SiO materials achieves a high gravimetric specific capacity ~2000 mAh/g, areal capacity above 3 mAh/cm2, first cycle Coulombic efficiency of ∼62% during C/20 rate formation process. The Coulombic efficiency is above 99.8% when cycles at C/3 cycling rate after formation. We will report the carbon coating process, the coating properties at different coating and sintering conditions, and their electrochemical performances.
