Lithium ion batteries experience rapid capacity fade at elevated temperatures. Solving this problem would expand the applications for this technology, but relies upon an imperfect understanding of the degradation mechanisms occurring within a cell. In this work, we present an analytical method using NMR which can give insight into the process by which electrolyte decomposes at high temperatures, as well as evaluate the effectiveness of mitigation strategies. By intentionally adding impurities and changing conditions, we can study the degradation of the bulk electrolyte during thermal aging by separating the effects of different factors, and therefore understand how to prevent the process from occurring.
