Modeling and developing high temperature processes involving rare earth metals relies on comprehensive data concerning their behavior in molten salt media. The aim of the present study was determining kinetic parameters of reduction of lanthanum, praseodymium and neodymium ions in the melts based on the ternary eutectic mixture of lithium, potassium and cesium chlorides. The experiments were performed at 400–750 oC on a tungsten working electrode employing cyclic voltammetry and chronopotentiometry. Potentials were measured vs. chlorine reference electrode.
Reduction of Ln(III) ions to Ln(0) for all the elements studied occurred as a single stage process. The process is reversible and controlled by diffusion. Transition time of the process was determined and diffusion coefficients of Ln3+ ions calculated.
