The increased availability of clean and renewable distributed energy at low cost is dramatically changing the way in which 21st century human endeavors are carried out. The impending global warming and climate change are accelerating the development and deployment of environmentally friendly energy technologies in all walks of human life. Solid-state power electronics is a key enabler of emerging global energy economy. This paper will identity the opportunities and challenges in wide bandgap semiconductor materials manufacturing, product design and system integration when developing next generation of energy and power systems for terrestrial and space applications.
