Layered materials are desirable for energy storage as they offer opportunity for facile ion transport in two dimensions. In some cases, interlayer spacing can change significantly upon ion insertion and deinsertion, while in others the material structure can be largely maintained during the discharge and charge process. Progress involving synthesis, characterization and electrochemical investigation of select examples from the families of vanadium, iron, and manganese oxide systems will be discussed.
