A new flow field using a flow-through design has been evaluated for the all vanadium redox flow batteries (VRB). By dividing the flow between flow-by and a portion of the flow going through the electrode, a significant improvement in the performance was obtained. A 5 cm2 carbon paper (39AA SIGRACET) electrode was used, and the gap between the membrane and each electrode was 2 mm. A vanadium electrolyte system using mixed sulfuric and hydrochloric acid was used. Charging / discharging cycles were performed and compared with the flow-by design. The polarization curve was also compared for a range of states of charge and flow rate. Moreover, the influence of the concentration of vanadium electrolyte and flow rate on the coulombic, voltage, energy efficiency and the pressure drop were evaluated for the new cell design.
