There is a substantial amount of value-added chemical products in concentrated brines from desalination plants that is currently wasted or lost in the treatment process. Capturing a portion of these chemical products would provide a new source for producing fuels and industrial chemicals that would also minimize concentrate volume. This talk will discuss our recent efforts to demonstrate and evaluate the feasibility of an integrated sunlight-driven zero liquid discharge system for inland brackish desalination, with concomitant production of fuels and chemicals.
